Dr. Michael Brazil to discuss Reactive Magnetron Sputtering at SVC TECHCON 2017
Michael Brazil, PhD, Senior Scientist at Vergason Technology, Inc. will be presenting a paper on “Reactive Magnetron Sputtered ZrCN Decorative Films for Plastic Substrates”. Dr. Brazil will report experimental results of depositing ZrCN from a magnetron sputtering system without substrate bias, and staying within the thermal limits of a plastic substrate. He will share his findings on the relationship between color and abrasion resistance, especially for dark reflection levels.

She shared her responsibilities, what a typical day would look like, her background and provided students with tips and suggestions for what they can start doing now. Mercedes-Benz Gives VTI Full Concept S1 Approval
Daimler Group, one of the biggest producers of premium cars including Mercedes Benz, recently awarded VTI Full Concept Approval (S1) for SuperChrome™ PVD coating on exterior automotive trim components.
S1 approval indicates that the coating has passed an extensive battery of laboratory tests, and is now approved for on-car real-world testing.
Subsequent approvals including S2 and S3 are required before serial production can begin and are currently underway in Europe.

SuperChrome™ PVD Coating Patent Allowance
VTI recently received Notice of Allowance from the US Patent & Trademark Office that the SuperChrome™ PVD coating patent application was allowed. The allowance encompasses both the proprietary SuperChrome™ PVD coating composition and process.
SuperChrome™ PVD coating is a replacement for traditional electroplating, and has all the benefits of decorative chrome plating, without the harmful hexavalent chromium (Cr+6) compounds. It requires no clear topcoat and has excellent adhesion on thermoplastic substrates, making it a preferred alternative for decorative plating on plastic automotive trim pieces and other such applications.

The ITB Group recently presented its second Smart Automotive Surfaces conference in Novi, Michigan featuring leading OEM engineers, innovative suppliers and other industry experts that all convened to address innovations, developments, trends and shaping interior and exterior components and systems. VTI was proud to have Michael Brazil, PhD, Senior Scientist at Vergason Technology, Inc., participate as a presenter on the topic of SuperChrome™ PVD Coating.
During his presentation, Dr. Brazil introduced Physical Vapor Deposition Technology in order to discuss the many advantages PVD Technology offers such as being environmentally friendly and resistant to corrosion. PVD also conforms to the REACH directive in production, disposal, and avoiding Cr3+, Cr6+ and Ni. Dr. Brazil furthermore discussed the versatility and durability of SuperChrome™ PVD Coating at the conference, bringing up its two-layer decorative coating design and its adherence with major test requirements for automotive interior and exterior parts.

Vergason Technology Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of Bruce Deiseroth as Vice President of Sales & Marketing. Mr. Deiseroth joins the Senior Management Team, with his primary focus on guiding all customer-facing initiatives and strategies.
With over 30 + years of sales, management and industry experience, Mr. Deiseroth brings extensive knowledge in the Nuclear, Analytical Chemical/Optical, LED and Industrial Automation Industries, having held Technical Sales & Business Management roles in Westinghouse Electric, IST Corporation, Endicott Research Group, & most recently Horizon Solutions. Mr. Deiseroth also previously served as VTI’s Director of Sales & Marketing for several years.
“We are excited to welcome Bruce Deiseroth back to VTI during this period of rapid growth,” stated Mark Fitch, president. “He will focus on accelerating our momentum in coating services, which has tripled this year. Bruce will also be responsible for the global roll-out of our new SuperChrome™ PVD Coating equipment and technology, which is poised for rapid adoption, as conventional chrome plating is being phased out internationally. As a seasoned business development executive, Bruce will bring additional strength to our Senior Management Team.”
Gary Vergason took over the active position of president for the Society of Vacuum Coaters (SVC) in May 2016. During the prior two years as vice president, his primary role was to lead the analysis of the SVC’s current contract management and to guide the executive committee’s review and decision of the future management requirements.
The SVC’s new management home is with ASM International in Materials Park, Ohio. The surface engineering aspect of the SVC compliments the field of ASM’s affiliates nicely. Gary’s keen interest is to add to the ASM’s world-class training facility with the addition of physical vapor deposition (PVD) equipment from the SVC’s base of vacuum coating equipment suppliers. This will provide PVD technicians and engineers hands-on educational opportunities year around.
Gary has been working in the PVD field for over 35 years and will continue the SVC president role until May 2018.
