Controls Engineer

Vergason is seeking an experienced and driven controls engineer to join our team. As a member of our Engineering team, you will support production and sales by developing new electrical designs and control systems for VTI’s PVD equipment line. You will also support our internal Coating Services productions team through creating or modifying PLC control software and hardware for automated equipment such as PVD systems, 5-axis paint robots, automated conveyorized paint lines, automated ultrasonic cleaning lines, etc.

Essential Duties Responsibilities:

  • Become VTI’s in-house expert on all control hardware, software, and programming.
  • Develop electrical systems and control systems which will be incorporated into next-generation vacuum coating equipment to be sold world-wide.
  • Debug and resolve any electrical or control conflicts during equipment start-up, acceptance testing, and commissioning of new coating systems.
  • Provide technical support to internal Coating Services production team.
  • Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are observed for all work completed.
  • Support sales team in pre-sales technical concept and budgeting activities.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or similar related degree).
  • 3-5 years related job experience.
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.

Basic Requirements:

  • Electrical and software design of customized solutions including manufacturing automation and safety systems. Able to maintain project scope and timing.
  • Build and validate systems which include pneumatics, servos, vfd’s, relays, communication networks, touchscreens, pushbuttons, and robotic integration.
  • Create customer documentation such as user manuals, programming diagrams, network diagrams, and electrical drawings.
  • Efficiently organize and plan work tasks to meet company goals.
  • Willing to travel up to 20% of time, including internationally.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Proficient with MS Office, Allen Bradley/Rockwell RSLogix 5000, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical. Siemens Software and hardware experience is a plus.
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of control and electrical system design and its application in automated industrial designs including specification of power, sensor, and communications systems.
  • Self-starter who is comfortable working in a low-support environment

Senior Thin Film Applications Engineer

Vergason is seeking an experienced and driven applications engineer to join our team. As a member of our R&D team, you will support production and sales by developing new films and processes using VTI’s PVD systems. This includes establishing robust thin film deposition processes through rigorous characterization and statistical validation before ramping them into high volume production. You will prototype and sample new projects in support of sales effort. You will work alongside equipment and integration engineers, as well as our staff scientist to assess and develop necessary films and equipment to achieve these objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Primary responsibility is the development of thin films materials & deposition techniques to improve efficiency, cost, reliability and quality of our films
  • Investigating and assessing new deposition techniques
  • Integration of these new processes to production
  • Optimization of processes using designing of experiments (DOE)
  • Establishing proper Statistical Process Control (SPC) schemes for new processes
  • Coordinating/executing experiments in the lab
  • Communicating with sales and help solve customer technical issues
  • Mentor junior applications engineers

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • B.S. degree in Engineering and 4+ years of related experience or M.S. Degree and 2+ years or Ph.D. and 0+ years
  • OR equivalent combination of education and years of related experience

Basic Requirements:

  • Degree in Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related fields
  • Experience with deposition and characterization (e.g. structural, chemical, optical, and/or electrical) of thin films.
  • Self-starter, comfortable with owning a development project.
  • Flexible, creative problem solver, willing to adapt to unexpected situations to get results.
  • Team player, positive outlook, good at working with diverse groups.
  • Excellent communicator, both in presentations and written reports.
  • Willing to travel up to 15% of the time.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Hands on, practical experience with materials/process development and problem troubleshooting on vacuum deposition tools (e.g. PVD or PECVD).
  • Demonstrated failure analysis work in which the candidate was responsible for choosing the best samples and metrology to quickly identify issues and root cause resolution.

Sales Engineer

Vergason is seeking an experienced and driven sales engineer to join our team. As a member of our Sales team, you will support growth objectives by securing new accounts in both our Coating Services unit as well as our capital equipment unit. This position will require interfacing directly with customers’ engineering staffs, as well as acting as liaison between customer and our R&D team. A sound technical background in engineering, material science, or other physical science is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and present technical and commercial proposals in response to customer RFQs / RFPs
  • Provide extensive pre-sales support to potential new customers
  • Coordinate and attend trade show exhibitions, sometimes as sole VTI representative
  • Write and present technical papers or new product introductions at trade shows and symposiums
  • Develop a level of technical competence in all business unit areas to be able to speak authoritatively and convincingly about the features, benefits, and advantages of all of our products and services.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • B.S. degree in Engineering and 4+ years of related experience
  • OR equivalent combination of education and years of related experience

  • Experience with vacuum coating technology
  • Experience with coatings, either paint, powder, PVD, CVD, or plasma spray.
