VTI is just back from exhibiting at the Automotive Interiors Expo 2017 held in Novi, MI.   The expo was held in conjunction with Automotive Testing Expo 2017 & Engine Expo 2017. It was a must-attend technical show for many Detroit-Based OEM representatives, Tier 1 /Tier 2 suppliers, and the downstream supplier community.

A notable array of state of the art technology covering a very wide spectrum of automotive component and system evaluation technology was on display, as well as a healthy number of exhibitors (including VTI) supporting the 1st iteration in the USA of the very successful Automotive Interiors Expo held every year in Stuttgart, Germany.  (see VTI at the 2018 Stuttgart Expo June 5-7, 2018  http://www.automotive-interiors-expo.com/en/)

There was an amazing parade of high quality contacts expressing interest in VTI SuperChrome™, for interior and exterior trim and other decorative/functional components. SuperChrome™ and our more traditional PVD solutions were on display, to address the ever-changing design interests of OEMS and the greater supply chain.

I would like to give a major shout-out to not only the Show organizers, but all the workers, attendees and exhibitors who braved a water main break during the entire show, rendering restrooms and running water unavailable to not only the venue, but to a large portion of the regional community. We stoically endured porta johns and hand sanitizer overload, and it did not appear to dampen the spirits of any that were in attendance.  It’s highly encouraging to see a generally pampered and privileged business community realize that we can survive and thrive under less than ideal conditions. The open bar on the show floor on Wednesday night did not hurt either…..

PVD TechnologyFollowing along with the success and excitement generated at AIX  - the Automotive Interiors Expo – in Stuttgart in June 2017, VTI is pleased to support the first annual exhibition at AIX US, to be held October 24 to 26 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan.

“AIX US is about quality, color, texture, touch, feel and innovation. Specialty finishes are a strong theme of the expo, with some companies offering plastic compounding and masterbatching, metallized plastics and chrome-look plastics, and others presenting hot foil stamping and film insert molding.”

VTI will be featuring their SuperChrome™ PVD Coating, the preferred alternative to decorative chrome plating.  With the touch and feel of traditional chrome plating, SuperChrome™ requires no painted top coat and demonstrates excellent adhesion on plastics.  SuperChrome™ has met and exceeded many of the most stringent automotive tests for traditional chrome plating, and painted surfaces, even surpassing 330 hours of the grueling “Russian Mud” test, which far exceeds traditional chrome plated surfaces.

SuperChrome™ is REACH compliant and contains no harmful hexavalent chromium (Cr +6) compounds. Visit us at AIX US to meet with our team and discuss our PVD technology. We are happy to provide you with the information you need, as well as assist with quotes.

Did you ever wonder how durable VTI’s BlackCat™ Tactical Coating is?  To answer this question, we conducted a series of abrasion tests and wanted to share the results.

Using a Model 670 HD Crockmaster, the tests were conducted with lateral abrading 100mm repetitive dual action, equivalent to “one stroke”.  One pound (454 grams) was distributed to a 10 mm stylus.  The test samples included the following three materials:  Genuine Leather and Cordura, both common materials used for holsters, and 7448 3M Scotch-Brite pads, a strong abrasive material.

When testing Genuine Leather, after 35,000 strokes the leather used in the experiment was destroyed, yet the BlackCat™ coating was not worn.

Cordura was tested next with 10,000 strokes.  The repetition tended to polish the coating leaving a polish mark, but did not break through BlackCat™ Tactical Coating.

Finally, a strong abrasive test was conducted utilizing a Scotch-Brite pad.  The test consisted of 5,000 strokes.  Like Cordura, the test sample displayed a polished mark, but the coating was unharmed.

BlackCat™ Tactical Coating is ideal for applications including firearms, scopes and optics, knives and cutting tools, archery equipment, and tactical lights.

Vacuum Metalizing EquipmentElectronic shielding applications are growing with the expanded use of plastic housings due to the required cost and weight reductions of metal counterparts.  Complex shapes can be coated by physical vapor deposition (PVD) using magnetron sputtering, yielding increases of coating adhesion and offering a wider variety of materials that can be deposited over coatings.  Traditionally, these coatings have been deposited using thermal evaporation.  With PVD, films greater than one micron thick can be deposited uniformly by utilizing planetary rotation.  Complex masking can be accomplished with multiple techniques including laser cutting, additive manufacturing and injection molded fixtures. Key to a successful product deployment is to involve your PVD partner early in the product design to simplify the coating masks and reduce part handling during the coating process, which can reduce the coating costs and improve the shielding coating performance.

EMI shielding is most commonly used in electronic devices in the automotive and health care industries, mobile devices, and for military hardware and avionics.

Vergason Technology, Inc., provider of quality metalizing services, as well as vacuum metalizing equipment, is happy to provide you with additional information regarding this shielding, as well our many other products and services.

Metal Coating EquipmentA leading international medical component manufacturer recently purchased VTI’s new Press-Side®38 Rapid Cycle Metallizing System to apply a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating for a challenging shielding application.  VTI worked closely with the customer to identify the coating specifications, design a customized metalizing system with proper masking to meet the requirements, and develop the shielding and coating process.

VTI’s new Press-Side®38 Rapid Cycle Metallizing System is similar to the Press-Side® 4000SL in footprint and operation, but has increased capacity and throughput by as much as 35%.

Vergason’s custom-built coating systems are capable of applying any alloy or metal (including aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and nickel) in a single or multiple layers, meeting the requirements of even the most demanding shielding project.

Our business is one of the global performance leaders in press-side rapid cycle metalizing equipment. When it comes to the best metal coating equipment, you can trust Vergason Technology, Inc., to provide you with only the best selections available.

PVD Technology | Vergason.comVergason Technology, Inc. was recently awarded certification to the new ISO 9001:2015 standard.  ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards that provides a quality management system standard to help organizations improve overall performance and provide a sound basis for sustainable development initiatives. The quality management principles encompassed in the certification include customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision making, and relationship management.

The certification process required several months of preparation, by Dan Van Allen Quality Coordinator, and his team, involving each of the principles. In preparing for the audit, the team worked with an outside consultant, who provided guidance for meeting the new standard. The focus of the 2015 standard is heavily weighted on risk assessment. The team looked at key internal and external stakeholders and identified risks that the company faces and how they can be either eliminated, minimized or addressed. The goal is to identify how the problem can be prevented as opposed to using corrective action after a problem has occurred. The new standard also emphasizes management involvement and management driven standards to address risks and opportunities.

Mark Fitch, President, recalls when VTI first achieved ISO 9001 certification in 2005. “Our customer base is quite diverse, and maintaining our registration provides a common quality standard that is recognized by all our customers…whether they are in automotive, medical, defense, electronics, or consumer products. The most recent 2015 standard focusses less on operating procedures and more on business strategy and risk mitigation. In many ways, the new standard brings more value to the corporation than the old one.”
